Substance Abuse and Cognitive Re-framing and Systematic Positive Reinforcement

Most people now know that addiction is a chronic—but treatable—condition. We also know that the right treatment is highly effective in helping people get clean and stay that way. But which treatments are most helpful? There are many to choose from, but the one that has proven time and again to be fundamental in helping treat addictions and a host of mental health issues is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT.

CBT incorporates the most effective aspects of behavior therapy and cognitive therapy and operates on the premise that your thoughts create emotions, which lead to behaviors. To change your behaviors, then, you must monitor your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and replace these negative thoughts with positive ones to create lasting emotional and behavioral change.

It also incorporates aspects of operant learning theory, which proposes that your behaviors are strengthened or lessened by positive and negative reinforcement. Additionally, CBT represents a melding of emotional, familial, and peer influences.

Let's have a more in-dept look at two more CBT Techniques:

Cognitive Re-framing or know as Cognitive Restructuring

This is also known as NLP re-framing, is a psychological technique that consists of identifying and then disputing irrational or mal-adaptive thoughts. Re-framing is a way of viewing and experiencing events, ideas, concepts and emotions to find more positive alternatives. In the context of cognitive therapy, cognitive re-framing is often referred to as cognitive restructuring. Cognitive re-framing, on the other hand, refers to the process as it occurs either voluntarily or automatically in all settings.Cognitive re-framing therapy includes many other techniques including visualization, relaxation, biofeedback, hypnotherapy, negative thought stopping, etc. Cognitive re-framing treats phobias, sleep disorders, eating disorders, habit reversal, anxiety, depression and many other challenges.

Systematic Positive Reinforcement

The systematic positive reinforcement is one of the cognitive behavioral therapy techniques in which certain (positive) behaviors of a person are rewarded with a positive reinforcement. A reward system is established for the reinforcement of certain positive behaviors. Just like positive reinforcement helps in encouraging a particular behavior, withholding the reinforcement deliberately is useful in eradicating a mal-adaptive behavior.
